What is a Cajon?

standard4The Cajon in Spanish meaning crate or drawers and now is sometimes referred to as a box drum or beat box. And also a drum kit in a box
It originated in Peru in the 18th century in colonial times. Originally shipping crates played by the slaves for entertainment and also for communication. As it became westernised they were made from hardwood with a thin playing surface called the tapa.

In time it starting to be used in different types of music such as Afro Peruvian, and flemco, and later in jazz music. It was around these times that they started to add guitar strings and drun snare to them to create the snare tones.
They are now used world wide and enjoyed by both professional and beginner percussionist.
